Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
The FDA has approved EEG assessment to be a diagnostic aid, along with behavioral criteria and developmental history. Two standard brain wave frequencies, known as theta and beta waves, can be measured in a non-invasive test called QEEG. The theta/beta ratio has been shown to be higher in children and adolescents with ADHD than in children without it. The theta/beta ratio has been shown to be higher in individuals with attention concerns than in those without.
Neurofeedback is the operant-conditioning training that can then be effective in helping children and adults increase their concentration and focus and to decrease their hyperactivity, impulsivity, and distractibility.
With neurofeedback training we target these excessively slow theta waves and teach the client how to decrease the power of them and increase faster beta activity. Successful training results in improvements in classroom, interpersonal relationships, and even athletic performance.
